Some concerts are entertainment. Others are transmissions from a strange parallel universe.
For more than five decades, The Residents have occupied a world entirely their own—an anonymous, constantly evolving collective known for their iconic eyeball masks, surreal imagery, twisted storytelling and fearless collision of experimental rock, electronics, theater, film and performance art. They didn’t simply emerge from the underground; they dug a tunnel beneath it and built their own civilization.
Now, The Residents bring “Eskimo Live!” to Tacoma: a full-length theatrical reimagining of their landmark 1979 album Eskimo. Originally constructed from chants, electronics, invented rituals, ambient sound and dark satire, the album became one of the group’s most celebrated and deeply unusual works. More than 45 years after its release, The Residents are transforming it into an immersive live production featuring narration, characters, surreal visuals and music rebuilt from the original recordings.
Bringing a production this rare and historically significant to Airport Tavern Music Hall is a huge moment for Tacoma. The city has always had an appetite for music that is raw, independent and a little left of center—and few artists represent uncompromising creative independence quite like The Residents. This is the kind of adventurous performance Northwest fans would normally expect to travel to Seattle, San Francisco or another major market to experience. This time, the eyeballs are coming directly to Tacoma.
Opening the evening is Rushadicus, the infamous Cello Goblin alter ego of virtuoso cellist Rushad Eggleston. Blending classical technique, bluegrass improvisation, metal riffs, vocals, kazoo, imaginary languages and gleefully unhinged performance art, Rushadicus turns a solo cello set into a one-goblin theatrical uprising. He has been described as an entire futuristic wonder-band contained inside one performer—and honestly, that still may not fully explain what is about to happen.
This is not a nostalgia show. It is an evening of living, breathing avant-garde theater from artists who remain committed to making audiences wonder what the hell they just witnessed.
The Residents. Rushadicus. “Eskimo Live!” in Tacoma.
Come curious. Leave permanently altered.
