The climate crisis can feel overwhelming — a problem so vast and so urgent that meaningful solutions seem perpetually out of reach. But what if some of the most powerful fixes were hiding in plain sight, found not in the halls of government or the boardrooms of industry, but in a patch of ocean seaweed and the industrious work of a flat-tailed rodent? In this one-hour documentary special, veteran science journalist Miles O'Brien travels across the country to meet the optimists, innovators, and true believers who are tackling climate change in ways that are as surprising as they are compelling. Methane from livestock is one of the planet's most urgent warming threats, and Joan Salwen believes she has found the answer in a red seaweed called Asparagopsis taxiformis that can reduce cattle methane emissions by more than 90 percent. O'Brien follows her story from a seaweed farm in Baja California to research laboratories at UC Davis and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and all the way to Australia, where low-methane beef is already on the menu. Then he heads to the American West, where eco-hydrologist Emily Fairfax is making the case that beavers — once hunted to near-extinction — are among nature's most powerful weapons against drought and wildfire. Together, these two stories make the same quietly radical argument: that the most surprising solutions are sometimes the most powerful ones.

The Orpheum Theater is a historic, indoor venue located on Aspen Street in downtown Flagstaff next to the Weatherford Hotel and Residence Inn.
