Non Plus Temps are a Bay Area ensemble whose core members you'll also find in fine bands such as Famous Mammals Naked Roommate, & Preening. Tail waggers all, but bunched together here, they spray a hybrid snork like few others. The debut lp, 'Desire Choir' from 2022 was an infectious hopper of left field dub & etcetera that make it difficult to stay still. And 'Conditional Bunker' their followup 2nd effort, is an even more demanding dinger than the debut. And as is their want, NPT's song catalog reflects a wide range of structures: the yarp familia via the Canterbury cabal, reverberating chasons ala Family Fodder, hints of Frank Chickens Enka scramble, Laughing Clowns horn-swoggle + all that is worth noting from an appreciation of the On-U Sound & Y Records imprints. I mean, what else is there to say? It's a platter of unctuous sonority, deserving of a galaxy''s worth of Michelin stars. Or in the parlance of your mom, "Fuck art, let's dance”. - Siltbreeze

Listening to San Francisco Bay Area experimentalists Pateka’s self-titled debut LP feels like taking a Rorschach test. Their intricately constructed songs duck and weave in unexpected ways, blending genres and collaging sounds together into something new that ultimately leaves each listener with a slightly different impression. The record strikes a delicate balance, at times evoking the Bay Area’s avant-garde (Deerhoof, Bill Orcutt, Sweet Trip), the angular sounds of Philadelphia bands like Palm and Pulgas, the neo-soul harmony of D’Angelo and Hiatus Kaiyote, the humor of NYC’s Standing on the Corner and even the nostalgic arrangements of Ellington-era jazz and Brazilian tropicalia. The band’s collaborative approach to songwriting borders on the obsessive, with each composition undergoing months of revisions in their shared home in Richmond, California. Friends for almost two decades, the members of Pateka release a debut that also acts as a love letter to their home in the East Bay, referencing important places and traditions from the band’s shared adolescence. In the past few years, Pateka’s unique sound has come to help define a new wave of East Bay experimentation. Rooted in tradition but fearlessly experimental, their debut feels all-at-once heartfelt, technical, off kilter and totally unique.

Murder Murder

Murder Murder is a Bay Area-based organ of chaos and entropy led for two decades in a de facto manner by Paul Costuros (Death Sentence: Panda!/Total Shutdown/XBXRX) and generally featuring a bevy of unhinged freakazoids culled from the creme of the SF/Oakland art-punk-spuzz-weirdo-rock-free-jazz-noise scene. -Weasel Walter
