Nick Zoulek, alto, tenor, and bass saxophones
Ten years after its release on Innova Recordings, Nick Zoulek returns to Rushing Past Willow, his debut album for solo alto, tenor, and bass saxophone.
The music of Rushing Past Willow builds immersive layers from repetition, circular breathing, vocalization, multiphonics, and unconventional articulation. Writing in The Wall Street Journal, Allan Kozinn highlighted Rushing Past Willow's “rapidly undulating, swirling figures that seem unstoppable,” calling Zoulek “stunningly virtuosic, whatever the genre.” The Huffington Post called the music “wickedly contagious, bizarrely beautiful and extraterrestrial.” While Zoulek's musical vocabulary has continued to expand over the decade since, with projects like Enter Branch (Better Company Records) and Chamber (New Zone Records), along with collaborations with S. Carey, Nathalie Joachim, J. Ivy, ~Nois, Third Coast Percussion, and many others, Rushing Past Willow is a true starting point..
For this tenth-anniversary performance at Constellation, Zoulek returns to the music that established the foundation of his solo practice, revisiting a sound world that investigates memory, loss, repetition, connection, and time.
