A 2025 City of Chicago Individual Artist Program awardee, Brian Citro, reunites with drummer Quin Kirchner in a quartet featuring saxophonist Nick Mazzarella and bassist Matt Ulery. Their new album, Keep Moving (Home), on Calligram Records, features Brian’s “lyrical yet modern guitar playing” (Fareed Haque) on 14 original compositions. Recorded to tape by engineer Dave Vettraino at Chicago’s Palisade Studio, the album presents an “emotionally resonant …convergence of composition, performance, sound, and visual presentation” (Paris Move). The group developed its sound during a 2024 residency at Dorian’s Through the Record Shop in Chicago’s Wicker Park neighborhood, and the music flows from Brian’s experiences living in India and traveling in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Brian’s previous album, Acoustic Pastime, on ears&eyes Records features solo guitar arrangements of his compositions and Thelonious Monk tunes. Here, the group performs Kenny Garrett’s “Soldiers of the Fields” at the Hungry Brain.
