MISS BELLAS

Synopsis

Miss Bellas is a 60–75 minute original music-theater work that explores fame, class division, cultural erasure, and moral responsibility. Set in a dystopian but unsettlingly familiar world, *Miss Bellas* takes place during a lavish annual “Give Back” event hosted by a once working-class performer turned global celebrity. The piece interrogates performative philanthropy, complicity, and the cost of forgetting where you come from.

Blending theatre, live music, bilingual text (English/Spanish), and striking visual design, *Miss Bellas* is both spectacle and critique. It is an immersive experience that asks who pays the price for comfort, celebrity, and silence.

Story

Miss Bellas is at the peak of her fame. She lives inside the Wall, a physical and ideological boundary separating the aristocracy from the impoverished lower class beyond it. Cloistered by her success, Miss Bellas has become ignorant of the realities she once knew. Her annual give-back event, *The Bellas Benefaction*, is ostensibly charitable but has grown increasingly hollow, serving more as a public relations exercise and cash grab than a genuine act of solidarity.

Her long-suffering, emotionally conflicted assistant is caught between two worlds. He remembers Miss Bellas as she once was—a struggling artist deeply connected to her culture. At the same time, he is pressured by a group from outside the Wall to make an example of her, arguing that her fame has made her the perfect symbol of betrayal, privilege, and excess.

As the evening unfolds, what begins as a carefully curated arts showcase transforms into a psychological and moral pressure cooker. The assistant is forced to choose between loyalty, memory, survival, and revolution.

The climax centers on a lethal final confrontation between the assistant and Miss Bellas. For the first time, stripped of artifice, she pleads for her life in Spanish—her native language and the language of her past—desperately attempting to reconnect with the humanity she abandoned. In a final reversal, the assistant does not kill her; instead, he kills his friend and revolutionary leader, Jose.

The show ends with Miss Bellas and the assistant standing together onstage, unchanged in costume and status, forcing the audience to confront the unresolved consequences of that choice.
